Really enjoying the space combat. Haven't spent so much time on the ground yet. Discovered that if you turn on the US proxy in the launcher options (my installation had set no proxy) it solves the horrendous lag in space in Sol, or anywhere there was more than about 4 other player ships.

Haven't really got my head around the in-game chat, and apparently the next patch will have some UI improvements, but multiple-ship battles are fun. Just wish I had some spare time to play it.

So if we can form a guild and get our own Starship - I would like to be the obligatory crewman that dies each week cause I am wearing the yellow shirt.
Panzerkin - We are our own featherd bed.

(red shirt) :P  Although that'd have to goto Hari or Macky if they started playing :)

Is there a scary fanbase already playing who are diehard trekkies? The only thing I fear more than diehard LoTR fanatics, is fanatical trekkies

What do you think?

There are idiots QQing on the forums because the server has been crashing a bit. During an Open Beta Stress Test. Funny that. And I only read that thread looking for an update on server status. The STO forums are full of whining about "non-canon" stuff.

Actually that last sentence is 4 words too long.

I've spent the morning playing it, and its been pretty good so far, not really run across any of the rabid trekkie fan base yet. Space combat looks fun, and ground combat seems like it could be really interesting in a team of humans. The ship names in the sector map view are amusing to read - especially the spelling errors - U.S.S WareWolf for example :p

I am a bit worried about the non-combat ground missions. I had one this morning that if it was a race horse, it would have been taken out the back and shot a long time ago. The client has been hard locking my PC a fair bit, which is something that hasn't happened in years, so hopefully they sort that out as well.

It also auto joins you into groups when you enter an "open instance map", not really sold on that yet - this morning i joined a search and rescue mission in time for it to complete without having to do any searching or escorting.

Could be the video card overheating. Make sure you've got "lock to frame sync" turned on - if it's off, your graphics card will run flat out generating as many frames per second as it possibly can, and overheat. Apparently this is happening quite a lot to people with high-end cards that can run at a high FPS.

I had a great ground mission last night where the rest of the away team fell below the terrain after I took 10 steps - being trapped below hills near the spawn point meant they couldn't assist me kill the 5 bad guys guarding the next crate I had to grab - after 3 deaths I gave up and abandoned the mission. There's a bit of that. :)

The fleet actions are fun but open to anti-social behaviour - don't be the first ship to aggro the enemy unless you like seeing a dozen phasers target your ship and reduce you to ashes in seconds. :)

I've just apped to Southern Cross Fleet - no idea what they're like but their recruitment thread looked okay and they have their own forums. :) Until we get into the end game content it's really about having some people in the right timezone to chat to really.

My main (all 8 levels of him!) is a Liberated Borg engineering officer called Horse, or "Horse@Horse" in STO parlance (that's "toon-name@account-name"). I'm also planning to create an alt (probably Tactical) called Caballus sometime soon. Yes, the Borg toon reveals that I too signed up for the lifetime sub - it just seemed like too good a deal to pass up. Hopefully the game will be still around in 18months to justify it, but early signs are promising - they actually coped really well with Launch Week, all things considering.

That said, I won't be in STO much this week - getting the Love Festival achievements in WOW are my priority, I only need that and the Lunar Festival for my Violet Proto-drake, not taking a chance on missing these again.

Sorry, typo fixed.

BTW, meant to post this. If you're a bit of a minipet-obsessive in WoW, you might be interested in this thread about breeding Tribbles. Tribbles breed by consuming food they find in your inventory, and apparently you can try and crossbreed for the rarer subspecies. Your toons "use" tribbles in ground combat for various minor buffs.

Favourite bit from the post:

Quote
Historically, one of the first questions people ask about tribbles is "How do I breed them?". Shortly thereafter, many people come to the follow-up question "OK, now how do I STOP them from breeding?", quite possibly followed by "Hey, that was my booze!"

If people are interested, I have a Lt grade 10 Science Officer called Yavanna@Lalaith. Eventually I'll probably roll an engineer, but I am having too much fun trying to be an electronic warfare officer :p

tested STO in closed and open beta and the game SUX balls BIG time its not star trek at all in champions online with a new skin cryptic completely screwed up on this one and is not worth the money they are asking don't waist your money wait for a free trial before looking at it it will save you the rage you will have if you pay for it and find out how crap it is, there is more zoning then EQ and 100% scripted no free roaming space at all no random planets to beam to nothing it should not be classed as an MMO as there is no massiveness about it max 20 people per inst and the PVP sux bigger balls then the game its self and is very one sided even tho they promised 2 factions fed/Klingon when the game was first announced and they failed to give us that,

I bought the game and haven't played it because I gave up trying to get my 30 day trial (that required a US visa) to work.

I bought it off steam, no dramas apart from downloading it twice (don't ask). I quite enjoy it.
